Stephen Hawking: It’s Time to Go

There aren’t many ‘academic celebrities’, and Stephen Hawking is definitely one of them. He’s known for being incredibly intelligent, and now he’s saying something that is in many ways earth shattering – that the only chance for human survival is to spread out into space. And he considers himself an optimist.

Looking inward is always required. If Stephen is suggesting that we forego introspection for outward expansion then he has only half of the story correct. His ideas about diversification are necessary and arguably just as important as introspection. Perhaps he’ll speak about how both are required for the sustainability of the human species.

  I agree with you. It’s scary to think that leaders like this could believe the right strategy would be to just take our unsustainable model and spread it throughout the galaxy. I’m not sure whether Hawking has discussed what it would take for us to actually be sustainable on Earth, but I do appreciate the point he’s making regardless – that we’re treating finite natural resources as if they were infinite, and that cannot last. Hopefully his words will help draw attention to that simple fact.

Our current scorched earth policy of resource management isn’t sustainable. Even if we move to another planet. Unless we become like the aliens from the movie Independence Day. Swarm other planets like locusts, strip it bare and move on to the next.
